[Feature request] Full-screen colour correction using active ICC profile
Mac OS (X) has always made it possible to apply a display colour profile to obtain better-if-not-optimal colours in each and every application (including the desktop background) and MS Windows has a similar feature since at least version 7. On the Linux side of things there is a plugin for the rebooted Compiz that does this (CompICC), as well as a proposed effect for KWin (crippled, ATM).
I know of no other WM that offers this very useful feature, which can really make the user experience a lot nicer. From what I understand the colour correction can be implemented as a shader for the compositor, so the only tricky part should be how to minimise the number of unwanted interactions and side-effects when used in combination with other compositing effects.
- CompICC obtains the ICC profile information through Oyranos which is not widely available through distributions, but the KWin plugin is standalone in this aspect and requires the user to specify the icc profile file path. It should be possible to obtain the configured default profile information through standard means.
- The KWin plugin interferes with (disables) the effect that makes windows (semi)transparant under certain conditions; this should of course be avoided (see above).
Xfwm4 has become my preferred window manager as it has the feature set I need and a pre-existing discrete theme (Mint-X) without getting in my way or having pointless resource requirements.
