The argument for improving the search
I know you guys have already improved the search but I still think is not ideal. Examples:
- I have a gopro microsd card in my laptop. Gopro records as .mp4 and then .other-extensions. I want to quickly find a bunch of .mp4 videos to copy to my drive. In Nautilus for example I go to the microsd folder and quickly type ".mp4". It shows all .mp4 videos from that path and its sub-paths. It can also display the thumbnails so I can choose based on thumbnails what videos I want to select. Here: Peek_2021-10-16_13-13
This is not a "rare" case. I've seen that many people search like that. It is quick and most of the time the filenames do not give you a hint, but the thumbnail does. In Thunar, to do what I just did above in 1 second, it takes me extra steps: open the search on Catfish, do the search. Now it finds all .mp4 files but I get no thumbnail. I am lost as to what to do next.
- Quick search the system for a file to open as root. In Nautilus I search the file in System, right click and open/edit as root. Peek_2021-10-16_13-16
In Thunar I'd have to open Catfish, perform the search, right click and open the file in Thunar, then right click and edit as root. Since I can add multiple custom actions to Thunar, I lose them in Catfish so I have to go form Thunar, to Catfish, then back to Thunar to take advantage of the right click custom scripts I added.
It is way way faster if you do a search based on a keyword/extension in that folder and all subfolders. The fact that I feel impaired to use Thunar makes me install Nautilus on XFCE and that's not what I want. But search should be done in the file manager and be fast and intuitive. Type and search. What can be faster than that!?
I hope you understand my points.
