[Confirmed: intentional behavior] Folders with names ending in ~ are not hidden, yet files with names ending in ~ are hidden

Mint 21.3, Mint 22(.0) beta, Xubuntu 22.04

Thunar version 4.18.4 and 4.18.8

Steps to reproduce

1. Create a new folder and name it something like folder~
2. Create a new file and name it something like file~
3. Refresh the folder view and observe how only the file has become hidden.

Current behavior

Folders with names ending in ~ are not hidden, yet files ending in ~ are hidden

Expected outcome

Both the file and the folder with names ending in ~ should become hidden

Additional information

For all I know this sort of behavior is actually intentional? I say this because the exact same thing actually occurs in Cinnamon's Nemo as well

Seems to be the same for all file managers (I tested Nemo, PCManFM, Caja, Dolphin, Nautilus)

So I suppose it is either intentional / follows some defined standard, or it is a upstream bug (very unlikely, since the behavior is the same in gtk and qt based apps)

The typical naming for hidden files in Unix-Based OSes is, to prefix them with a dot, that works well for files and folders.

The tilde (~) is often used in temporary or backup files created by text editors ... as such, typically it's just not used for folders. So it's actually not related to "hiddden" files, but to "backup" files. Thunar uses the following code to check if a file should be shown or hidden:

So after all, I think there is nothing to fix here … things do work like intended. If you think it makes sense to as well mark folders as "Backup" files for some concrete reason, then best open an issue against glib/gio: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/glib
