Googlemail returns 401 though there was no configuration change

Starting from today, I get a 401 error in the log and the mail check fails. I just checked if my account has been compromised and the password has been changed, but I can still log in with my password in the web browser, just xfce4-mailwatch-plugin cannot, starting from today. It has been working for years in the past though.
