It appears that 'gimp-remote' is now deprecated (deprecation was first suggested in 2005). I can find no 'official' declaration of gimp-remote having being removed, but it no longer works!
gimp 'filename' now performs exactly as gimp-remote 'filename' previously did. ie. if gimp is already running, 'filename' will now be added to the list of files which are currently being edited.
