Code paths guarded and deprecation warnings silenced in the above commits. For the GtkStatusIcon replacement I'd be for using libayatana-appindicator rather than writing our own implementation of the StatusNotifierItem specification, but it lacks support for the Activate signal. A push request has been opened for this, perhaps it will be merged for a future version: https://github.com/AyatanaIndicators/libayatana-appindicator/pull/71.
