On typing something, only 1 type of search should be allowed

I'm using xfce4-taskmanager 1.2.3 in Xubuntu 20.04

Steps to reproduce

1. Open xfce4-taskmanager
2. Click on any running task i.e. firefox
3. Start typing i.e. xfc

What should happen

• Top search box should focus with xfc written on it
• Running tasks get filtered based what I'm searching

What went wrong

• A search box is opened in the bottom right corner of taskmanager
• The matching running task gets highlighted

The current behaviour defeats the purpose of having a dedicated search box at the top

The screenshot shows gnome-system-monitor automatically entering my search query in a search box when I start typing

Workarounds

• Don't click on a running task before typing when taskmanager is first opened
• Use CTRl+F before typing
• Manually click the search box and type

Looking at gnome-system-monitor code:

• They initialize the process table with gtk_tree_view_set_enable_search (GTK_TREE_VIEW (proctree), FALSE);, I think this only disables the bottom right field but doesn't sends the keystrokes to the top search box.

Since task manager is being ported to GTK3 with CSD, it should behave similar to gnome-system-monitor imo.

The search field is a filtering field, while typing on a list jumps to an entry in the list, so this seems fine as is, as the behaviour of typing in a list is used everywhere in the UI (e.g. thunar, keyboard shortcuts list).

Featuring a searchbar and not use it by default seems counterintuitive to me.

For example Settings Manager doesn't allow you to type until you click the searchbar or CTRL+F (highlight the searchbar).

I know it's not a major problem, i'm saying it would be nice to favour the searchbar instead of the quick jump wich is more obscure and non-discoverable.

When you open task manager, similar to search manager, the default focus of the window is in the search bar, so you can begin typing and that is quite intuitive to me.

@ochosi If there is an agreement that this issue should be resolved by having a single type of search, then I can post a patch to completely remove the process-tree type-ahead search from the source code. My personal preference is the same as @marcosins - there shouldn't be two types of search in the task manager, there should be only one that works so well that there is no need for another type of search.

One is a filter (upper one), other is a navigating helper(in the bottom) that works the same way in all other system applications. Don't see a problem to keep both, as they behave differently and achieving different goals.

I also agree with @marcosins and @atomsymbol.
In fact, this second field is a breaking change with the workflow task-manager offered till now.

CSD non-sense I endure, even though if I liked gnome UX (ahah.)... I'd use gnome.
But this search field will be a deal-breaker for me:
For now I stay with former release (before CSD),
and will change to an alternative if xfce4-taskmanager persists with this.
It's the same feeling as gnome save-dialog that will filter as you type instead of taking save-to name.
