Reveal and fix critical warnings from savers

There is still a normal warning that may appear when closing the preferences dialog:

Gdk-WARNING **: 20:09:19.892: GdkWindow 0x4400003 unexpectedly destroyed

Not sure if it is possible to fix it at a reasonable cost in terms of work time/size of changes.
