Background color options gradient and transparent not working

Linux Mint 20.3 xfdesktop-settings 4.16.0 (Xfce 4.16)

In the backgroud tab the color drop down list have 4 options but only plain seems to be working.

If i try horizontal gradient, vertical gradient or transparent they all just do what the first option plain color would do. I can select a color for the second color box to the gradients but i just see a plain color from the first color box all over the desktop. No gradient. And selecting transparant still shows the color that was used last.
