xfce4-settings update 4.20.2 -> 4.20.3 break screen resolution on boot

Since xfce4-settings update 4.20.2 -> 4.20.3 the screen resolution, when I start xfce in a VM, does not get restored correctly anymore. It defaults to some low resolution.

When I open xfce4-settings -> display the "Resolution" drop down is empty. I can manually select my preferred resolution and that works fine but I have to do it after each reboot.

I tested this in three (similar, archlinux) VMs, all have the same problem.

When I downgrade to xfce4-setting 4.20.2 it works again.

I assume it's related to this commit: e84b0e78
