By default, adjust the font size or DPI based on the size of the screen
These days, we see 14-inch laptops with full HD screens.
On such screens, at such a resolution, by default, everything looks miniscule. In fact, I stayed away from most DEs other than GNOME for precisely this reason.
I could never use XFCE for an entire day without leaning into my laptop to see better.
While it may sound stupid, I did not know that we could configure the system's font size. GNOME does a really good job with this. Even on small screens, things "look big"—the icons, settings panel, and so on.
Would it be possible to set the default font size according to the size of the physical display? I can see how we can run into issues with multi-monitor setups, but I just wanted to throw this idea out there, should it help.
Also, what is the difference between font size and DPI? Setting a high font size affected only a few applications—on Firefox, for example, everything still looked tiny.
Setting a higher DPI did the trick for me. XFCE is a pleasure to use now.
(I understand that there is something known as fractional scaling as well, but I read that it is very intensive on the CPU. Could someone elaborate on this?)
