Mouse settings allows mouse in use to be disabled, preventing re-enabling
xfce-mouse-settings presents 'devices' with a pull-down list of devices and an unmarked switch at the right hand side of the dialog. I believe this switch may once have been implemented as a tickbox 'enable this device' but this is no longer the case.
Discovery invites toggling the switch, but if the action is performed against the device currently functioning as a mouse, it is not easily reversed, especially if the keyboard has no numeric pad and hence no way to move the switch back to enabled.
Settings and xfce4-mouse-settings don't appear to have an obvious way to find version number, but this behaviour is in the version shipped with debian 11.
