4.19.3 regression: closing laptop lid no longer enters suspend (when configured)

Running Gentoo on a Thinkpad, xfce4-pm is configured to enter suspend when I close the lid (both when on battery and plugged in). With 4.19.2 everything works fine and as expected. After a recent update to 4.19.3 & restarting X/xfce4-pm, closing the lid no longer enters suspend; I see elogind's "Lid closed" message in dmesg, but the system can still be pinged and the Thinkpad LED is not fading in/out, but always-on.

There are no error messages anywhere - just "Lid closed" followed by "Lid opened" and no suspend in between.

Ironically "Suspend when idle" did suspend the system because somehow its default value changed after the update, which was confusing until I disabled the setting again.

Downgrading to 4.19.2 immediately restores the expected behaviour.
