Closing the lid does not turn off the screen when it should

I've set the xfce4-power-manager (v4.16.0) to switch off the display when laptop lid is closed on both the battery and the AC. I also have DPMS enabled, yet the screen doesn't turn off when the lid is closed. The same hardware works with other DEs so it should be a software issue.

Can somebody reproduce this behavior?
