Description
Since i'm using xfce 4.14 my xfce-panel crashed sometimes. Mostly it happens while i'm closing an application like (for example) Firefox or Thunderbird. With xfce 4.12 i don't had such issues. The panel goes away abd a half second later it comes back again and works perfectly again.
My dmesg shows this lines:
[27855.513815] xfce4-panel[1263]: segfault at 8 ip 00007f86a717146b sp 00007fff8cf6f8c0 error 4 in libtasklist.so[7f86a716f000+c000]

This happens in a daily use of system every 4 or 6 days. i can't reproduce this bug which makes it difficult :(

said:The crash is on libtasklist.so (Window Buttons plugin), but without debug symbols it's hard to tell precisely where, judging from the trace I would say xfce_tasklist_remove or xfce_tasklist_finalize, which are called when a window is removed from the list. Well, without a reliable way to reproduce the crash, it's very difficult for us to provide a fix. If you notice some kind of pattern, e.g. closing a certain app is more likely to crash, please let us know.

As this is happening pretty much daily, happy to gather extra debugging using the symbols etc if you can provide ones.

For me it sometimes happens after several days of use of my laptop, mostly after wakeup from sleep mode. I have several instances of the terminal open, and when I try to open another one, they all go away.

Even without debug symbols, the stack trace is similar to what was reported before, again the culprit seems to be Window Buttons plugin (or maybe libwnck indirectly), more precisely at this function.
Unfortunately without a way to reproduce this crash it's very hard to come up with a fix. Can you please post your plugin settings (a screenshot of its properties dialog should do)? Also, did you notice any usage pattern that causes the crash?

I have this bug too. All i have to do is open two xfce4-terminal windows, they get grouped in the window-buttons plugin. I middle click on one of the entries and it crashes with the panel quickly restarting. If i middle click the other window also the panel freezes, does not restart and i cant interact with it until i restart it myself. Same behavior with 3 Mousepad windows. Which version do you use?
xfce 4.14 on xubuntu 20.04. xfce4-panel is 4.14.3-1
Edited by Dimitriy Gulivatyy- Maintainer
Maybe this is fixed in 4.16.x by 906ea6bb. Not sure if it's the same problem as above though.
Ah, thank you very much! I must have misunderstood.

I finally managed to compile the panel around the quoted commit (I had to disable vala, see https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=13819), and I confirm that it does fix this bug.
- Developer
The report can be closed then, correct?
- Maintainer
No, I think the bug in this thread is not the bug in the main thread.

This seems to be specific to 4.14, whether it comes from the panel itself or from the versions of the libraries generally used with this version. Please reopen if it is reproducible with 4.16.
