After changing to a differnt font (eg Sans), xfdesktop can be started again:

$ xfdesktop & [1] 24134

The package versions are:

$ pacman -Qs xfdesktop local/xfdesktop 4.11.8-5 (xfce4) A desktop manager for Xfce

$ pacman -Qs xfce4-panel local/xfce4-panel 4.11.1-4 (xfce4) Panel for the Xfce desktop environment

Both ringo32 and me are using Manjaro Linux.

Not able to reproduce in Xubuntu 20.04 and Xfce 4.14. Please reopen if you can still reproduce it and provide steps.
