The menu opens at the beginning of the button, not in the direction of the cursor
I like to use the window buttons expanded to fill the panel where the tasklist is. That way, I noticed that when you right-click on a window, the context menu opens in a fixed position, always at the beginning of the window button, next to the program icon. I think the menu should open in the direction where it was clicked.

## Description
When the plugin's appearance is set to 'Session Menu' it displays the login user's name in the panel and it would be nice to be able to just have an icon appear rather than text.
Possible icons could be a head (e.g. stock_person.png), or the log out (e.g. xfsm-logout.png), etc.

I suspect that there might be no way for the panel to handle keyboard shortcuts directly, but even the ability to send a command to the panel would be helpful (to create shortcuts in Xfwm manually). For example, something like:
```
But that would probably require some sort of an IPC support, which may not be present in the panel.
# What I expected to happen
I expected for either
* the ability to set a custom icon theme to a dark one
* a dark icon theme to be selected automatically
* if these are all symbolic icons (?) could this be solved automatically
# Notes
* I am note sure if the only icons which are affected are ones that are symbolic ?
* Note that the panel settings page is also affected by this (eg it's UI is in dark mode but the icons are not visible)
* I have not worked out how to get other panel plugins working when building my own xfce4-panel yet - so unsure how other plugins are affected (and hence my odd looking panels :-) )
To say that it's annoying and feels error-prone is to say nothing. Here are my observations and reasons why I believe this should be reworked:
1. Now when `xfce4-panel` is wrapped with a `systemd` service unit, in the `systemd` Journal, I see output spam (essentially `stdout` and `stderr`) coming from all sorts of different applications that were started via `xfce4-panel`, e.g. from Chromium:
```
Jun 22 02:15:55 g75vw xfce4-panel[1903]: [10737:10737:0622/021555.811459:ERROR:gles2_cmd_decoder.cc(5759)]
GLES2DecoderImpl::ResizeOffscreenFramebuffer failed because offscreen FBO was incomplete.
Jun 22 02:15:55 g75vw xfce4-panel[1903]: [10737:10737:0622/021555.811606:ERROR:gles2_cmd_decoder.cc(3984)]
ContextResult::kFatalFailure: Could not allocate offscreen buffer storage.
```
and this is just one small example. Essentially, `stdout` and `stderr` of `xfce4-panel` become littered and overloaded with totally irrelevant stuff, not to mention journal itself.
2. `systemd` by default would kill children upon termination of unit. However, in context of GUI panel, launchers, menus, and etc. this does not make any sense because processes that are launched are logically not supposed to be owned by those, and should rather continue to run independently and user is supposed to take care of them as he/she started them in the first place. Hence, unless the following is added:
```
[Service]
...
KillMode=process
```
restarting or stopping `xfce4-panel` would cause a big bang for all applications opened so far.
3. Once again, user applications are no supposed to be owned by GUI panels, launchers, menus, and etc. They should become independent top-level processes. Please, use classic `setsid` and double-forking to achieve that daemon-like behavior. For brevity, I'm plugging a quality and well-tested POSIX shell implementation of what I mean (this can be easily translated into C, plus there are plenty of reading and examples in C on that topic too):
```shell
daemon() (
# --------------------------------------------------------------------------
# NOTE:
#
# The following snippet implements the classic and well-known daemon
# spawning approach via double-forking:
#
# 1. 'fork' --- create the first child process that is not the process
# group leader (the surrounding subshell);
# 2. 'setsid' --- create the new session, set the process group ID (become
# the process group leader of the newly created process group), and
# execute ('execve') the specified program (the non-interactive shell to
# create the second child process);
# 3. 'fork' --- create the second child process to execute the actual
# intended program as daemon (the non-interactive shell applying control
# operator <ampersand> '&' to the positional arguments representing the
# actual intended program to be executed as daemon).
#
# If job control is disabled (and it is here), both utility 'setsid' and
# control operator <ampersand> '&' (asynchronous execution of the preceding
# command) redirect the standard input, before any explicit redirection(s)
# are performed, to '/dev/null'. Hence, there is no need to explicitly
# apply that redirection, so only file descriptors of the standard output
# and the standard error require explicit treatment:
#
close && CDPATH= cd -- '/' && umask 0 && \
exec setsid "${SHELL:-sh}" -e -u -c '"${@}" 1> /dev/null 2>&1 &' \
daemon "${@}"
# --------------------------------------------------------------------------
)
```
where `close` is a function that closes all open file descriptors. You won't need to create a nested shell invocation to achieve the behavior of `&` in C of course, just a `fork` without `wait`.https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-panel/-/issues/301Position of window button tooltips not correct when moving mouse across buttons2023-12-22T23:27:56ZYousuf PhilipsPosition of window button tooltips not correct when moving mouse across buttons![tooltip_position-2020-06-25_06.02.32](/uploads/f96fed0989889c46c11427e6c4725abf/tooltip_position-2020-06-25_06.02.32.mp4)![tooltip_position-2020-06-25_06.02.32](/uploads/f96fed0989889c46c11427e6c4725abf/tooltip_position-2020-06-25_06.02.32.mp4)https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-panel/-/issues/302Allow window button icons to increase to 24px size2023-09-07T16:48:26ZYousuf PhilipsAllow window button icons to increase to 24px sizePresently window button icons are either 16px or 32px depending on the size of the panel, but allowing the 24px icon size is also important, especially when 'show button labels' are disabled.
I would like to control when pulseaudio runs, and noticed that it was
being started by unknown parties. Digging into that I came up with a
simple test case as follows:
0. I disabled pulseaudio autostart in /etc/xdg/autostart/pulseaudio.desktop
1. on lightdm logged into an openbox session
2. started urxvt
3. confirmed that pulseaudio was not running
4. started the xfce terminal
5. pulseaudio immediately started running.
If I log into a xfce session then pulseaudio also gets started even if
I don't start the xfce terminal. In the xfce panel I have a bunch of
xfce plugins configured.
My test was with the bells disabled in xfce terminal (audible and visible).
I do not have the xfce pulseaudio plugin installed. Pulseaudio gets started even if I start the terminal with the --disable-server option.
I tried 5 other VTE based terminals: lxterminal, tilix, termite,
terminator and gnome. Gnome was the only one that did not start
pulseaudio, and also the only one that started nearly instantaneously.
All the others, including xfce-terminal, took a second or two to
start. It seems from my tests that the reason pulseaudio gets started is systemd socket activation.
I am on Arch Linux.
Although I think this is a minor issue, there may be advantages in fixing it.https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-panel/-/issues/310Preferences: Number of rows slider is longer than Row size and Length2022-04-05T09:46:20ZMarcoPreferences: Number of rows slider is longer than Row size and Length```
- Window grouping: Always
Let's say i ordered my windows like this: `[Firefox][Thunar]`, then i open a new Thunar window.
What happens:
- The buttons rearrange themselves like this `[Thunar(2)][Firefox]`
What should happen:
- Buttons should keep their order like this `[Firefox][Thunar(2)]`
Closing the newly created Thunar window restores the buttons order to `[Firefox][Thunar]`. Here's a short video showing what happens:
I can't say exactly when it happens every time, but it is get fixed by switching xfce4 panel orientation from horizontal to vertical and back to horizontal.
I like to see 1 panel on each monitor, but if I configure it and start without monitors, all panels are visible on main screen.
Since Monitor settings have the nice profile features with auto-enabling I like to see this feature integrated to the panel.
- It should be possible to set the panel settings for each monitor profile
- New setting "hide" is required to be able to hide panels if not required in profile.
- Of course the default profile should be there if no monitor profile matcheshttps://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-panel/-/issues/326problem with xfce4 4.142022-04-05T09:58:13ZRiccardo Camilloproblem with xfce4 4.14hello,
I'm Debian xfce 4.14 user. I notice that some native applications like clementine or steam when minimized on bottom right corner there's no way to restore window at the middle of the screen. When click on bottom icon there's a mini popup window with some program options (like play previous track, play next track, stop playing, pause playing in the example with clementine), but there's no way to restore the window on the screen. The same with steam. On the previous version of xfce, 4.12, this bug there was not.
I do not know if this would be the right place for this discussion. I would like to suggest that there is an option of widening between icons in the notification area. I've seen a few issues about wrong placement of dialog boxes in dual/multi monitor configs. This is not my case: most dialog are correctly placed.
Unfortunately, EVERY time I right click on a panel launcher icon, click on "Properties", then on the "edit" icon, the "Edit Launcher" dialog box appears right in the middle of my 2 screens/monitors and I have to move it manually to be able to use it. And it does it everytime, if I move it, then close, then reopen it, it does not remember the new position.
Other dialog boxes do not have this problem, someone must have hardcoded the placement for this one...https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-panel/-/issues/345[Request] Xfce4 panel size by pixel length2022-04-05T10:16:22Zq64ceo[Request] Xfce4 panel size by pixel lengthHowdy!
I would like to request that along with a percentage slider for the length of the panel that a pixel length can be used as well. One sets the pixel size for the row size but the length does not use that.
I have two panels, one on top and one on the left hand of the screen. I have the one on the left at 100% and the one on the top at 98%. They over-lap one another ever so slightly but it is very noticeable. I've tried various row-sizes to match the two but unfortunately the panel is either too big or too small to get it perfectly aligned.
Moving the cursor to the edge of the display does not reveal the panel.
Things I've tried:
It doesn't matter whether the panel is a) oriented horizontally, positioned at top/bottom and display layout is two monitors above each other, or b) oriented vertically, positioned at side and display layout is two monitors besides each other.
Note:
This can be achieved by selecting the right display/monitor as output, or by selecting automatic output and keeping span monitors disabled.https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-panel/-/issues/356panel not at top after debian upgrade2022-04-05T15:02:27ZLaurent Alebardepanel not at top after debian upgradeHi,
I have a problem with an application that tries to add widgets in the notification area, namely multiload-ng-indicator (freshly compiled from latest source from https://github.com/udda/multiload-ng). It does not manage to display correctly the different monitored items; I only see the default app icon (a pulse over a green circle). You'd say it's the application's fault but I experience the same error with others (like indicator hardware). So I guess it has something to do with libappindicator3 which is the common factor between these problematic apps.
Running the applications in a terminal I get a Gdk critical messages:
Gdk-CRITICAL **: 14:53:40.178: gdk_window_thaw_toplevel_updates: assertion 'window->update_and_descendants_freeze_count > 0' failed
(Followed by application warnings: Indicator is not connected to panel, thus it cannot be displayed.)
I am running Xfce 4.14, specifically xfce4-panel 4.14.4 (from CentOS 8 repository).
![Bildschirmfoto_2020-11-15_18-56-29](/uploads/199e3a626790850822c891f9af21eb23/Bildschirmfoto_2020-11-15_18-56-29.png)
It is also possible to use the action button panel plugin. If the user clicks the shutdown button there, this will result in a countdown which will look less polished, like this:
If a `non-CSD` window is almost touching an `intelli-hiding` panel, it will not hide until the window overlap it, however, if the window is being `CSD`, so the panel will hide even when the window is too away from the panel to touch it.
I know this is panels-related, but I don't know how much related to any XFCE-subproject because I can replicate this behavior with the `Plank` panel too.
You can test it with the `XFCE Terminal` (`non-CSD`) and `Tilix` (`CSD`), or toggling the `Firefox`'s `[ ] Title Bar` feature in the `Customize` page.
Just a guess - maybe the only place this tab order is stored is in memory for the panel process which is about to be killed. If so, this probably means a fix will be slightly harder than it looks. The tab order will first need to be temporarily stored elsewhere (such as a temporary file, in the "xfce4-panel" process performing the restart, or in the windows themselves?) then reapplied after the panels finish reloading.https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-panel/-/issues/374XFCE session lock-up2022-05-22T16:56:12ZJay SandersXFCE session lock-upI am running XFCE 4.12 under Slackware 14.2, with an X session launched with startx -- -listen tcp. 1. Add a launcher to one of the panels - e.g the top one.
2. Right click on the launcher added above and click on Properties.
3. Configure this launcher so that it will attempt to execute the following command:
sudo some-command
where some-command stands for anything - even a nonexistent command will do.
4. Fill out the rest of the entries in the launcher creation menu.
5. At this point the launcher is present in your panel.
6. Click on the launcher above.
Assuming that you have not invoked the sudo command in this session, clicking on the launcher will cause the sudo command to attempt to prompt you for a password. However, because of the way it has been launched, you will never see the prompt. And what is really bad is that your XFCE session locks up. Completely. Nothing works - not only does it not respond to mouse or keyboard events any more but, in addition, the output from any running applications stops being updated - e.g. I have a clock app in the panel, and it just remains frozen at the second when the action described was undertaken. The same happened with the top application that was running in terminal emulator at the time.
Doing a kill -9 on the sudo (from e.g. an SSH shell) won't solve the problem. That is, the sudo process is killed, but the XFCE remains utterly unresponsive. The simplest way out that I found is to kill the X server - which is, of course, a painful way to proceed, especially if your session has been up more than just a few days.
Notice that if the launcher is defined with the Run in terminal option set then a terminal emulator is indeed created, and the prompt can be seen. In this case, the XFCE session won't lock up.
I used the sudo command to illustrate the problem in the simplest way. The fact is, any command executed by the launcher which attempts to prompt the user for input in the same way as sudo does will have the same effect.https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-panel/-/issues/375remove potential destructive actions from default configuration2022-05-28T17:17:56ZO Hremove potential destructive actions from default configurationIn my usage only the `"+lock-screen"` is relevant. I've noticed an issue with panel though, using 4.16.0-1 on Archlinux.
When setting a panel transparency
- either with solid color set to transparent
- or using a transparent image
the panel does not act as expected. It displays weird mix of old color wit blurred effect, but not transparent at all.
On mousehover some part of the panel get transparent, but not the separators for instance.
I tried other png or colors : it works. Issue seems limited to transparency.
I'm using Xorg, hardware is intel i915
My panel has
- whiskermenu
- windowmenu
- clock
- clipman
- systray
- some extended separators in between
If I can help / give more detail / try something, just let me know !
* This error only occurred after an update to 14.16.0, in which the old 'system notification' is replaced by 'Status Tray Plugin'.
* System is Arch Linux, up-to-date.
* This error is reproducible with teamviewer 15.13.6.
* Steps to reproduce:
1. Add the 'Status Tray Plugin' to the pannel
1. Start Teamviewer (installed from AUR - the arch user repository)
* As long as the Teamviewer main window is open, the error window will persist if you hit 'Execute'. I suppose as long as the main Teamviewer window is open, it tries to add an icon to the notification area, causing the crash.
* If you close the Teamviewer main window, and hit 'Execute' in the screenshot, then the Status Tray Plugin will start fine.
At first I thought it was LTO's fault (as you can see LTO releated stuff in build log). But after disabling LTO - build still failing, this time with same error messages but without LTO references.
To workaround compiling I just use **%define _disable_ld_no_undefined 1** flag and thanks to this compiling process ends without errors but this is not a proper fix and looks like thanks to this workaround I see xfce4 crash when trying to login to session.
Regarding that crash - I have to check it out as it may be a separate problem. Although I cannot rule out that is related to this one. Perhaps I will create a separate report later.https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-panel/-/issues/391systray hangs if application using the tray exits while context menu is open2022-05-11T17:40:24ZThermisystray hangs if application using the tray exits while context menu is openI got this with the blueman applet in the systray. If there's no existing bluetooth adapter it could detect when bluetooth is activated using the applet, it force closes itself. If at that time, the context menu on it is open, the systray becomes unusable. Any mouse click on it is not registered by the application. Mouse over events still work though.
Screenshot shows what that looks like (no mouse over shown there though, I did not bother showing that particular thing).
I'm developing PyQt applications and am using Qt's [QSystemTrayIcon.showMessage function](https://doc.qt.io/qt-5/qsystemtrayicon.html#showMessage)
### Problem
The system tray icon chosen for the application is not restored after a message/alert has been shown. Instead the icon after a message/alert popup (for example an "i" inside a circle) continues to be the icon in the systray
### Expected behaviour
After the timeout given (maybe 15 seconds) the systray icon should be restored to the one chosen for the application
(This is what happens for other desktop environments that i've used: LXDE and LXQt)
### Instances of this issue
I've only seen this problem in Qt applications, not for example in the wireless network indicator in the systray
This is not just a problem in my own applications though, also the official PyQt5 examples have the same issue
In xfce4-panel, whether horizontal or vertical, I'm trying to have the Actions Button and the Whiskers Menu button adjacent -- over/under for horizontal panel, left/right for vertical panel, the way it does for launcher buttons and external plugins. I can't seem to find a way to make it happen. And yes, I know the commands are already IN the Whiskers menu, but that makes an additional mouse movement and an additional mouse click, and I'm lazy. :-)
I've tried moving both of the icons, and that does not work. An MX forum admin running Xfce 4.12 does not have this problem, he can move the above icons to adjacency.
