"half-created" thumbnails when exiting folder before image fully written

On Xubuntu 16.04, tumbler 0.1.31-2build2, if I have a folder full of jpg's and do e.g.
mkdir converted
for i in *.jpg; do convert -blue-shift 1 "i" "converted/i";done &
Thunar converted
and then navigate out of the folder and into the folder as the images are being written, I get lots of half-gray thumbnails. These are not refreshed on hitting F5 or the twisty icon in the url field. See screenshot.
