Manual column widths expand to cause undesired horizontal scrolling
I've had an issue in Thunar for years that has bugged me. It's a cosmetic issue, but quite annoying in practice. Here's how to reproduce:
- View mode: "Detailed List"
- Disable automatic column expansion
- View a directory that vertically scrolls
- Set column widths as desired so that there is no horizontal scroll bar
- Change to a directory that does not vertically scroll (you can view all files on screen at once)
- Close the Thunar window
- Open a new Thunar window
- Navigate to a directory that has enough files to vertically scroll
- Observe that the horizontal scroll bar appears despite having made no changes to the column widths after step 4
Screenshots are linked above.
What I think is happening is:
- Widths are set by the user on a page with vertical scrolling
- User switches to a page without vertical scrolling
- Thunar resizes the last column of the details view automatically expand its width into the area previously occupied by the vertical scroll bar
- User closes Thunar, which remembers/stores the artificially wider value for the last column
- When Thunar opens again, the last column is wider than fits with the vertical scroll bar, so the horizontal scroll bar is shown
The end effect is that, despite me constantly fixing the column widths to get rid of the horizontal scroll bar, it keeps reappearing, which is frustrating.
