no picture thumbnails on Android phone

Xiaomi Redmi 8 Pro phone connected to desktop USB port.

Photo transfer mode selected on thephone Thunar can opens photo folders; i.e. DCIM, Pictures, but fails to show picture thumbnails. (Connected as gphoto2://...)
File transfer mode selected on the phone Thunar can open Internal Shared Folder, but fails to generate thumbnails (connected as mtp://...)

Phone runs MIUI Global 11.0.3 (Android 9) Thune version: 18-4-1 (thunar 1.8.14 (Xfce 4.14))

Linux 5.6.4-arch1-1 #1 (closed) SMP PREEMPT Mon, 13 Apr 2020 12:21:19 +0000 x86_64 GNU/Linux
