Removing an item in symbol view inadvertently selects another item

Steps to reproduce

1. Using Thunar, display a folder's items in symbol view (hit CTRL-1 if necessary)
2. Select an item
3. remove that item from the folder, e.g. by selecting "move to trash" from the menu or by dragging it to the trash or to another folder.

Current behavior

The item is gone, the view is rearranged, and the item that comes to be placed on the removed one's prior location is selected

Expected outcome

The item is gone, the view of the remaining items is rearranged, but no item is selected
