Thunar suggesting to remove fixed DVD reader/writer
Setup: freshly installed and updated Manjaro XFCE on a PC with built-in SATA DVD reader/writer. Inserted DVDs show up on the Desktop (as it was configured to show them) as well as in Thunar (4.8.16) under "devices". Now when selecting the little triangle "eject" icon right next to the DVD's name on Thunar's left pane the DVD get's unmounted and ejected (as it shold). However, I get the following desktop message "Drive (DVD's title) is being unmounted. The Device is being ejected. This might take a while" Then, once the DVD has been ejected: "(DVD-reader/writer's model name) can be savely removed. The device can be unplugged."
This is a bit odd as it is a fixed device.
On the Desktop I can select "savely remove medium" (interestingly that has only an effect after I mounted the DVD, either explicitly or by double-clicking it). I then get the following desktop messages:
"Drive is being unmounted. The device (DVD's title) is being unmounted. This might take a while." and then, once the DVD has been ejected: "The device (DVD's title) has been safely removed."
I see the following issues here:
- On the desktop selecting "savely remove medium" has no effect until the medium has been mounted (this is probably not related to Thunar)
- Both Thunar's and the desktop's messages are referring to the DVD as a "drive" or "device". It should be referred to as a removable medium instead. The system does display its type as removable medium, so the system is aware that this is not a USB thumb drive, for example.
- Thunar suggests that the DVD reader/writer could be unplugged. Maybe, just maybe, this might make sense for a USB DVD reader/writer (but even there I think it is unnecessary; why should empty USB DVD-ROMs not be unplugged at any time?). For a fixed reader it sounds pretty strange to the user. I think a more consistent solution is possible.
(please do not mind the precise wording, as I am using a non-English installation)
