[Feature Request] Vertical split panes

Like most people, I spend time moving files from one folder to another and split panes is useful for this. However, I have my screen setup in portrait, for working on code. This means that split creates two tall and very narrow panes which are cumbersome to work with. Could a feature be added to split the panes vertically? Occupying the upper and lower parts of the window instead of left and right.
