I will guiltily admit that I have not been so active on xkb-plugin since the option for variant presets was merged and seems to be on track for 4.20. That said:
Hi,
I would also prefer to have a possibility to display dedicated layout variant flags. However, I do not see the necessity of drawing all the possible variant flags. My proposal is to let the user draw the icon(s) by himself and put it to the flag icons folder. If on startup the variant flag is there, just use it.
Here is also my example. In Germany, almost any keyboard comes with German layout, which is slightly different compared to the US one. However, I prefer the US layout, which leads me to utilising the layout 'de' with variant 'us', since it is the US layout enhanced with German letters like 'ä' and others. Besides, I also installed the plain 'de' layout for all those fans of German layout :) Now, since both layouts are 'de', they both get the German flag, one of which is with dot. Since I use some more layouts, it is really inconvenient to pick the right German flag based on the dot only. Also, as to me, the de-us layout is an US layout with German supplement. Thus, I would draw a US flag with a smaller German flag in the corner. Other users may prefer other icons here. So, why not to let make the work by the users? I'm only missing the feature to be able to :)))

I have two keyboard layouts set up in the XFCE config, the regular US layout and US/dvorak. The panel keyboard switcher is set to global. The dvorak layout is first in the list and should be the default. But it isn’t, the machine uses the standard layout after login. Additionally, plugging in any USB keyboard device seems to make it reset to the standard layout. The xorg configuration and logs indicate that the new keyboard is getting configured as dvorak. This got extra annoying after I got some usb security keys that emulate a keyboard and seem to re-enumerate constantly…
If the second layout is a different variant layout (say the international version) then this doesn't happen.

I do not know where to put this feature request but there is an external plugin that shows keyboard led lights, caps and numlock. I wish they were clickable like lxqt . My laptop numlock button does not work any more. And now I can only switch using the command line.
