Would be nice to have an option where whisker menu launched taking up the entire available space between the panels. This is useful for the 'show as icon' display view.

As 'Log Out' is to log out the user and 'Log Out...' is to show a variety of options to log out, like shutdown, restart, etc. they should have different icons in the commands area of the whisker menu.
A similar bug is filed with xubuntu's elementary icon theme to create separate icons for each.
https://github.com/shimmerproject/elementary-xfce/issues/189
This is a one line change once a separate icon is created on one of these two lines with CommandLogOutUser or CommandLogOut.

## Description
Hello!
So, I flashed Linux Mint 19.3 XFCE on my USB Stick, thought I'd give it a shot.
However, the corner that's used to resize the menu at the top right of the menu irritated me so much. So I was wondering if I could just resize it the way I want, and then lock its size so that I can't resize it the normal way (from the menu itself) anymore, so that the size of it becomes locked and the resizing icon disappears.
Thank you in advance!

Noticed this directly after I upgraded from Xubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 since I had gotten used to the old way.
When I open the menu, then start typing to search for a program, for instance "Soft" to see 'Software' and 'Software & Updates', and then press the down arrow key on my keyboard to go to the second option, this new version seems to ignore my first down key press. The second one works.

When hovering over a category button, it would be nice if the load was absolutely as fast as possible. On my machine, the delays is about half second
A wild guess, is that this is contributing to the delay:
https://gitlab.xfce.org/panel-plugins/xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin/-/blob/master/panel-plugin/category-button.cpp#L43
So, how about removing that 150ms delay (make it 1ms?) and then I guess the rest of the delay is something else.

That issue was closed as wontfix, and I expect this issue will too. But thought it would be nice to have a not read-only place to gather more feedback, if any, in order to evaluate the community opinion(s).
For me whiskermenu strong point always was its extreme responsiveness and simplicity. I always disable all desktop animations of any kind, and until then whiskermenu was a great fit for me. I see the introduction of this animation as a regression.
Of course all of this is a matter of preferences, but I'm looking forward to hearing from other people perspectives too.

I just find some little asymmetry in "ergonomics", to say something, whether the Whisker panel button is placed on bottom or on top of the screen.
I find it feels good to have the [favorites - Recently - All apps] section next to panel button. Specially the switch between Favorites and Recently used.
This happens only when you place the button on top of screen, and not if you place it in the bottom.
That makes me think that WM was designed with a "panel on top" design in mind.
As it is a very common layout to have the panel on bottom or, more precisely, the menu button on the bottom left corner (also if you use a vertical left panel, as MX linux does by default), I think it would improve the workflow, for this layouts, when you're using the mouse to have that section in the bottom of the Categories section.
I can see that this could be a problem if the user has a lot of categories (it would be weird to have to scroll up to reach the first alphabetically ordered categories)

Desktop files having Terminal=true now fail to launch because of corrupt Exec path.
For example, I had a desktop entry like this in my ~/.local/share/applications:
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Play Alesis drums
Exec=docs/projects/dotfiles/configs/edrums/alesis_turbo.sh
Terminal=true
Type=Application
Icon=audio-card
Categories=Audio
Launching it from Whisker Menu resulted in the following error:
Failed to execute child
Failed to execute child process "docs/projects/dotfileconfigs/edrums/alesis_turbo.sh" (No such file or directory)
Notice the path is corrupt ("dotfiles/" became "dotfile"). I changed the location to absolute location (Exec=/home/panther/docs/projects/dotfiles/configs/edrums/alesis_turbo.sh) and the error was:
Failed to execute child
Failed to execute child process "/home/panther/docs/projects/dotfiles/nfigs/edrums/alesis_turbo.sh" (No such file or directory)
Again, the path was corrupt, this time a bit differently ("configs" became "nfigs").
I did a quick test with the Exec target being a script that would just echo foo>~/bar. With Terminal=true, it would fail to launch due to corrupt Exec path. With Terminal=false, it would work and there'd be ~/bar with foo in it. Using the .desktop files from xfce4-panel launcher still work normally.

I'm running XFCE 4.16 on a fresh Arch Linux install. For some reason, the profile icon in front of the username in Whisker Menu shows the image-missing.svg picture, even though I copied a 96x96 .png pic to ~/.face, /var/lib/Accountsservice/, and also set it in mugshot. It displays it properly on LightDM lock screen, but not on Whisker Menu. I tried deleting the panel, messing with xconf, changing icon theme, uninstalling, and a lot of other methods, but nothing seems to work. (IK it's a pretty small issue but it bugs me out every time I use the menu). I don't use NVIDIA, and I'm on the latest Linux 5.10 LTS kernel.

I have a secondary system that the whiskermenu (2.4.6) hasn't been updated yet which is not effected and displays them in the correct order. this only effects the directories (system, settings, accessories, etc..) not the menu items themselves (Firefox, Telegram, WICD, etc..). When I first started using alacarte several years ago, I had a similar issue that ended up being caused by incorrect permissions, but have checked and all are as they were. Upon first use of the Whisker Menu after logging in (or after running `xfce4-panel -r`), type the first letter (and only the first letter) of an application name.
The first matching application gains the focus, but this item is not visible in the list (even if it had been visible initially in Favorites). Rather, it is positioned _above_ the list.
To confirm that the invisible item has the focus, press `Enter` and the corresponding application loads. Alternatively, press `Up Arrow` and the focused item comes into view at the top of the list.
If, instead of typing only a single letter, you type two or more letters, the focused item becomes visible and appears where it should, at the top of the list.
This bug occurs only upon first use of the Whisker Menu after logging in. Missing however so far: In GNOME, I excessively used the keybindings and the dash view to both launch new applications and navigate between running application windows. In XFCE, so far I resemble this functionality by having bound xfdesktop --windowlist to a hotkey which doesn't support finding windows by name. It would be great if whisker menu would provide the option to list open windows and allow for switching to a running window by typing / writing its name. 1. The mouse pointer happens to be in the screen area where the whiskers menu will appear.
2. I press the hotkey to open the whiskers menu.
3. I type a few characters of the name of the app I want to open.
4. The menu correctly narrows the search results, *but* it also jumps the blue-bar selection to an item that had been directly under the mouse pointer.
Actual behavior: An item is currently selected which a/ I did not request, b/ may not even match the characters I typed, and c/ may not even have any direct relationship with the mouse pointer.
Expected behavior: The menu should ignore the mouse position until I actually touch and move the mouse. (It should respond to mouse *motion*. It should not respond to the presence of a stationary mouse pointer within the menu's bounds.)
In this screenshot, note that I'm searching for "ema" and, if I press return at this point, it will helpfully(?) open LibreOffice Math (????!!! why???!!!!???!!!???) and *not* Emacs as I would expect.
Also note the tool tip for "E-Book Editor." This tells me that the menu initially put LibreOffice Math a couple of rows higher, and picked up the item based on the mouse position -- and *then* late-arriving search results pushed LO Math lower. (Again, my expected behavior is at least that nothing would be selected at this point, or that the best match = "Emacs (GUI)" would be selected.)

This ...I'm using compiz as a window manager, and I noticed that whiskermenu after adding a keyboard shortcut does not respond at all when I press the key, i.e. once, right after logging in it starts normally and after closing it does not. This problem occurs in version 2.5.3, while version 2.4.6 works very well.
I found out that the problem is caused by the file `/usr/lib/xfce4/panel/plugins/libwhiskermenu.so`https://gitlab.xfce.org/panel-plugins/xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin/-/issues/61Weird keyboard shortcut bug with whiskermenu2021-11-19T19:36:10ZNikolas SpiridakisWeird keyboard shortcut bug with whiskermenuI wanted to make whiskermenu open and close with a keyboard shortcut so I set a shortcut on "Application Shortcuts" for my key combination (doesn't matter which one) to run "xfce4-popup-whiskermenu". When the menu is closed it works just fine (menu opens). But when the menu is open, when I click that key combination, it closes for a second and then it re-opens. So what's happening here is the moment I click the combination (before letting go of the buttons) the menu closes instantly and then (after I let go of the buttons) the command gets executed (which takes a good second on my slow laptop) and the menu is open again. The menu is closing only with the combination that is set to run "xfce4-popup-whiskermenu" each time, so a different combination can't close the menu.
Also I did a little test. I made a little script to run "xfce4-popup-whiskermenu", wait 5 seconds and then run "xfce4-popup-whiskermenu" again. And that worked just fine (menu opened and then closed).
Finally, I found this forum thread from 2 days ago explaining the exact same problem so it seems I'm not the only one experiencing this https://forum.manjaro.org/t/whisker-menu-not-closing-correctly/84558
I'm not sure if this is related to whiskermenu or xfce4-panel but I decided to post it here first.
I'm running Arch with Xfce 4.16 and whiskermenu 2.6.0

This is how you find you "apps", edit them or sort into categories.
**Here's the huge issue:**

**Here's the huge issue:**
_User A can easily right click an app from the Whisker menu and edit it. Say it adds a new name. Behind the curtain Whisker has created a .desktop file for that app in `.local/share/applications` to add to it the new name the user A has chosen. All good._
However, if user A later on deletes this app that he/she renamed, then the .desktop file is still present in .local/share/applications and therefore present in the Whisker menu. User A is confused. Clicks it and nothing happens. The options user A has is to "hide" this zombie app icon. So it does. Job done?
No.
_If user A will reinstall this same app in the future, it will not see it at all, anywhere. Because when he/she chose to hide it, Whisker menu added a hide option to the same .desktop file it first created when user A chose to rename that app._
So user A needs to somehow be aware of all of these and un-hide that app manually via `.local/share/applications`.
**Menulibre is doing things in the same manner.**
You see, you provide a very easy way for users to edit such apps and add them to categories and such, but not an easy way for them to undo these or deal with the consequences. I personally have hundreds of apps and end up adding them to different categories for ease of use, and some I rename or add keywords to them. In time I uninstall many of these apps, and then I end up with many zombie files in the menu. Now I have to go delete all of these .desktop files (that are named in all kinds of ways) from `.local/share/applications` ? This seems a bit insane.
**Lets fix it!**
We made a script that we tested with apps from repos, appimages, and flatpaks. Not tested with snaps so far.
This:
```
#!/bin/bash
for file in "$HOME"/.local/share/applications/*.desktop; do
name=$(basename "$file") || continue
[[ "$name" = appimagekit_* ]] || [[ "$name" = menulibre-* ]] && continue
[ -f /usr/share/applications/"$name" ] ||
ls /var/lib/flatpak/app/*/current/active/files/share/applications/"$name" &>/dev/null ||
mv "$file" "$file.bak"
done
for bakfile in "$HOME"/.local/share/applications/*.desktop.bak; do
origfile="${bakfile/%.bak}"
[ -f "$origfile" ] && continue
name=$(basename "$origfile") || continue
[ -f /usr/share/applications/"$name" ] ||
ls /var/lib/flatpak/app/*/current/active/files/share/applications/"$name" &>/dev/null &&
mv "$bakfile" "$origfile"
done
notify-send 'The icons have been refreshed!'
```
What it does is to check the `/usr/share/applications/` and `/var/lib/flatpak/app/*/current/active/files/share/applications/ `for .desktop files. If it does not find them there but they are in `.local/share/applications`, it means that these apps are gone (uninstalled) and so it renames the .desktop files from `.local/share/applications` with a .bak at the end, making them invisible for the desktop. This way if user A installs an app, then edits it via MenuLibre or Whisker menu, and then uninstalls this app, the script will be able to automatically remove the apps' icon from the system basically. So user A is now happy that he/she uninstalled an app and that app is gone!
More to that, if user A reinstalls the app, the script will bring back the original (and edited) app icon. User A is very happy. Uninstall or Install removes or brings back the app's icon, as it should.
But it is not as great as we want to, because any .desktop file added manually to `.local/share/applications` will be renamed too. Since users can also create new launchers via MenuLibre, these do not have a .desktop file in `/usr/share/applications/` or `/var/lib/flatpak/app/*/current/active/files/share/applications/` so our script would think that these need to be renamed. We then added a rule to ignore the files that start with "menulibre" (since MenuLibre renames all new launchers made via it, as such). Same was the thinking for appimages, ignore .desktop files that start with "appimagekit_" since appimages have no .dekstop file anywhere else.
So now, with our script, if users deal with repo packages, flatpaks, or appimages, and then they edit them via Whisker menu or MenuLibre, things will be fine and no zombie apps in the menus. And it even ignores the entries created by the MenuLibre.
**Help us.**
But to make our job a lot easier it would be best if all edited .desktop files via Whisker menu and MenuLibre be put into a separate folder in `.local/share/applications`. This way we could only temper with that folder and not the main
`.local/share/applications`.

As long as im just typing normally, the cursor will always be at the end of the text, so there is no need for the right cursor key in the text box.
The right cursor key is also very important and useful in icon mode because it will let you launch the second suggested application with just one additional button press.

In order to expand its features I would like to suggest that typing / or ~ should change from program search to folder listing.
This would allow to quickly open folders directly from the menu. It is wonderful that when I press the shortcut to open the menu or (rarely) click on the icon with the mouse the focus is already at the search bar. So my idea is to type /tmp <return> and open the folder in the default software (e.g. xdg-open /tmp).
I will gladly accept any outcome for this ticket, it this is something out of the scope of the project just close the issue. Thanks in advance.

While I couldn't name anything else to improve, there's one idea that's been haunting me for over a year. Let me briefly describe my motivation.
One way I very frequently use the Whisker Menu:
- Call it via the `SUPER_L` key.
- Type a keyword that matches an application I'm looking for.
- Move my right hand **all the way** to the Up-/Down-Arrow keys. (That's the cruel, exhausting part.)
- Navigate through the search results using the Up-/Down-Arrow keys.
- Open the target app by hitting `Enter`.
A keyboard-puristic approach as you see.
Many times I've thought how nice it would be if it were possible to navigate through the menu with the `K` (up) and `J` (down) keys, as is possible in `vim`, `less`, etc. Obviously, since hitting only those keys would type the respective letter into the search box, it would only make sense to require the `Ctrl` key being held down, too.
I'm not a C/C++ developer, but I think the code section that implements navigating via the arrow keys is in `panel-plugin/window.cpp`, from line 712 onwards (alternatively, search for `GDK_KEY_Up`). I cannot estimate what effort it would take to implement this, but it would probably make a lot of keyboard purists happy.
Let me know what you think of it. Regardless of your reaction, I greatly appreciate your work and your taking time.https://gitlab.xfce.org/panel-plugins/xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin/-/issues/71Launching program with icon in panel not possible when cursor is left2022-01-17T11:51:16ZMartin StinglLaunching program with icon in panel not possible when cursor is leftI have placed the xfce4-popup-whiskermenu icon on the very left side of my panel.

Quickly reopen the whisker menu (before Firefox/Thunderbird window is visible).

I guess it might be way it works in Windows but it makes it feel like the user is not in control.

I am proposing we change it from the default of ```dm-tool``` to:

to match the rest of the Commands and to not lean on dm-tool, which apparently is not terribly secure:

## Description
XFCE Application Menu supports both GenericName and Comment desktop file entries.
But its use is not correct. If both Comment and GenericName are present, application subtitle should use GenericName and pop-up should use Comment.
Current behavior:
Title: Uses name
Subtitle: If Comment is available, use Comment, else use GenericName.
Pop up: If Comment is available, use Comment, else use GenericName.
=> Subtitle and Pop up are always the same
Expected behavior:
The subtitle logic should be reversed.
Subtitle: If GenericName is available, use GenericName, else use Comment.

I think would be great. It would make Whisker more customizable and adaptable. For example I use the keyboard many times and I have it setup to open Whisker from my Super key. My attention is kinda at the middle of the screen after I press it to see Whisker, but then I have to re-adjust to wherever Whisker is positioned. I know, it is a small thing, but can be a great little help :smile:
Or at least make it open centered to the Whisker button itself.

The first search result always gets text rendered in the wrong (non-contrast color). In a bright theme, all of the results are black while the first one is white until I move the mouse cursor anywhere over the menu. In a dark theme, it is the same with colors inverted. The text of the first result cannot be read until mouse cursor force-redraws the menu.
While moving over results with the cursor, the currently-active icon under the cursor gets a contrast box drawn over and its text color inverts. There is a noticable lag in the text color transition that does not occur in Favorites or any of the application menus. This is a second issue.
The third issue is that (due to the lag?) when moving with the cursor from inside the menu area over "border" icons outwards, the text doesn't get redrawn with an inverted color after the icon-selecting box is withdrawn. As in the first issue that leaves the icon label non-contrast with the background.https://gitlab.xfce.org/panel-plugins/xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin/-/issues/84SUPER hotkey causes Whisker menu to suddenly disappear on Xubuntu 22.04 due t...2023-04-17T12:14:21ZLorenzo StancoSUPER hotkey causes Whisker menu to suddenly disappear on Xubuntu 22.04 due to xcapeAfter upgrading to Xubuntu 22.04, Whisker menu suddenly closes every time I open it running `xfce4-popup-whiskermenu` with a `Super L` hotkey I defined in keyboard settings under "Application Shortcuts". Often this is so quick I can't even see the menu, other times it clearly appears just to close itself in a blink of an eye. The issue does not occur when running `xfce4-popup-whiskermenu` in a terminal or in any other way.
I found out the culprit to be [the addition of `xcape` in 22.04](https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/libxfce4ui/-/issues/1#note_12979), which runs `xcape -e 'Super_L=Control_L|Escape'` in background when logging in. Running `sudo killall xcape` fixes the issue immediately, so for the moment I just disabled that command, named "Bind Super Key", under "Application Autostart" in session and startup settings.
I guess the problem is that `xcape` makes `Super_L` trigger `Escape` which closes the menu, but I'm not 100% sure about that. Also, the issue is not fixed by checking the option to leave Whisker menu opened when it loses focus.https://gitlab.xfce.org/panel-plugins/xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin/-/issues/85no app icon selectable from hidden directory2022-07-28T14:54:31ZZoltan Krausno app icon selectable from hidden directoryIn the earlier versions of xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin app icon was selectable from both hidden and unhidden directories which feature disappeared in the version 2.7.1-1. Firstly, like others, I'd like to express my gratitude for this amazing program you've made. It is the only start menu-like program I've found that does exactly what I want and nothing over the top like a lot of others I've seen. The GTK CSS selectors make it relatively easy to theme and make it fit your OS. Whiskermenu on its own is the biggest reason I use XFCE (though I do love a lot about the DE)!
All this said, I'm curious if there'd be any interest in allowing users to specify - either via icon name or likely via icon picker - which icons they want for the commands (the three in the lower-right corner in below image:
![image](/uploads/418ff649f9d1d7da7b6fd103812d372f/image.png)
I personally would like this as I'm not a fan of the icons my pack happens to have for this specific case. I am aware there's a few options, one being to change the icons in the pack, but I'd still like to be able to use them in other situations, or the other being manually change the icons in `settings.cpp` from 104:170, then building from source. That said, I think the best option would be to allow the application to give users the control since it's the least intrusive to the system and less work by the end user.
If this is an idea you'd be on board with, I'd love to move forward on either contributing it myself or seeing it added by someone else. If this isn't something you're into, I'll just save a little time and hardcode the new icons into my own source. I am by no means a C++ dev but I can figure out what I need by using code from elsewhere in the app, like the taskbar icon selection.

With Whisker menu this does not work really well because if the option to have the menu stay visible when the focus is lost is not activated, then the menu will close as soon as the mouse exits the boundaries of the menu (if there is another window underneath) and, if this option is set, then it requires a click on the menu icon to close, which is also annoying.
Could there be an option to close the menu only a click happens outside of the menu or, if this is not possible, when another window is raised above the menu (which I suppose can be seen by polling XQueryTree regularly, even if it’s not very elegant). I gues that this would work except for clicks on the desktop itself.
Otherwise, maybe just adding a small delay (configurable or not) before the menu closes when the focus is lost would help for cases when the mouses briefly exit the menu boundaries by mistake.https://gitlab.xfce.org/panel-plugins/xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin/-/issues/89Allow custom command for 'Add to Panel'2022-11-30T19:21:07ZHemishAllow custom command for 'Add to Panel'Some distros like Zorin Lite, provide plugins like DockbarX, which shows a Windows-like or LinuxMint-like icons for active applications (its not just lanucher, its a hybrid of launcher and active applications), also some users use xfce4-...Some distros like Zorin Lite, provide plugins like DockbarX, which shows a Windows-like or LinuxMint-like icons for active applications (its not just lanucher, its a hybrid of launcher and active applications), also some users use xfce4-docklike-plugin which provides kind of same functionality. In these cases, clicking "Add to Panel" from whiskermenu on any application, adds it to panel as a a launcher, that too at the end of panel, it would be beneficial if a custom setting is provided to provide a command to invoke when 'Add to Panel' is clicked, sure the default would be the current method to invoke xfce4-panel's add launcher function. I have two monitors. On each monitor, I have a panel. Mainly for aesthetic reasons (but also in case my main monitor was acting up and I couldn't access the Whisker menu on my main monitor), I would like to have a Whisker Menu on both monitors. However, if I have a Whisker menu on my secondary monitor and run xfce4-popup-whiskermenu (typically via the shortcut key I have mapped to open the Whisker menu), it opens the menu on the secondary monitor instead of the primary one I work on most often.
<h3>Current Workaround</h3>
At the moment, I have just put a standard application menu on my secondary panel.
<h3>Proposed Solution</h3>
I was thinking that the xfce4-popup-whiskermenu command could have a parameter for which menu. This could be with a number assigned to each menu (or UUID), which could be got by adding a feature to the command to list available menus or being able to get (and maybe set) a unique identifier in the individual Whisker Menu's configuration dialog.
