indicate microphone state in panel icon

Sink volume and mute state are reflected in panel icon. However there is no indication whether or not the source is active. I would like to see an indication here, so an unmuted microphone can be identified easily and without opening the menu. I am not interested in the volume here, just mute state (for example with a red dot) would suffice.
