Rename this project
The idea is simple - drop direct dependency on PulseAudio (or at least overly direct mention of such product in package title), and be more generic, allow any backend: PipeWire / PulseAudio / pure alsa / ... No features dropped, no resource usage increase, just flexibility.
The current panel plugin can already work with all 3 mentioned backends. Slight adjustments can be made in "Audio mixer..." button behavior, documentation and of course update dependencies a bit. That's it!
This comes from the guy who doesn't speak C as fluently as he wishes to be. I believe there can be quite some confusion with current situation (especially for newcomers), and this proposal is trying to address some of it.
There is xfce4-volumed-pulse project, where description says: "Fork of xfce4-volumed with support for PulseAudio". I haven't seen neither this fork nor original package. xfce4-volumed was removed from Debian repos in 2015, the fork has never made way to Debian repos.
xfce4-volumed name sounds quite good for the generic purpose plugin. A good candidate for xfce4-pusleaudio-plugin to be renamed into.
There is also xfce4-mixer project which was also removed from Debian repos back in 2016. Not sure how it works, maybe it is related.
By default, in current panel plugin "Audio Mixer" setting has no value which now defaults to launching "pavucontrol". When PulseAudio is not present, but a user has Alsa, one can write sensible-terminal -e "alsamixer -c 1" and everything still works (this is likely handled by xfce4-mixer project too?). I'm not aware of a good alternative on PipeWire, but I made sure that plugin works as intended for volume control at least (up/down/mute/microphone), and I pointed mixer to qwpgraph which is not the application user might be looking for.
Thus a very quick test on 3 different backends confirms that panel plugin is working everywhere, making expressive PulseAudio mentioning in plugin title a bit misleading to say the least.
