[FR] [PATCH AVAILABLE] Add optional short units with fixed-width panel values

The current panel values, such as 12.3 KiBps, take up considerable space. Please add a “Use short units” checkbox to the options dialog, disabled by default.

When enabled, panel values should use compact suffixes with no space between the number and suffix:

1
99
999
2.1K
22K
222K
1.1M
99M
999M

Suggested formatting rules:

  • Use whole numbers below the first unit threshold, without a suffix.
  • For scaled values below 10, show one decimal place.
  • For scaled values of 10 or more, show whole numbers.
  • Use only K, M, G, T, or P; omit B, b, and ps.
  • Support both existing bits and bytes modes, preserving their respective scaling.
  • Promote to the next suffix when rounding would otherwise produce a four-digit number.

Each value should occupy a fixed four-character slot from startup, using monospace text and right alignment. Changing traffic rates should never resize the slots or shift surrounding panel elements.

Tooltips should retain full units and the configured precision. The option should also apply to cumulative panel values and persist across restarts.

A unified patch implementing this behavior is attached.
