Feature request: Set background color for tabs

It's currently possible to set the color of the title of a tab, and (in the Preferences -> Colors window) it's possible to "Vary the background color for each tab", which selects a random color for the background.

It would be great to be able to set a specific background color, based on user choice (and perhaps even lightly scriptable, e.g. depending on what directory you're in). I would like, for example, to have the same background color for all tabs that are ssh'd into a particular host. Apparently the Terminal app on OS X allows this.

Since the "Vary the background color for each tab" option gives the ability to change a tab background color, and there are several facilities that give the ability to choose colors, I'd expect that this wouldn't be a very difficult feature to implement, but I'm afraid it's beyond my capacity.
