Bell icon does not change anymore for new notifications

The bell icon used to change when a notification appeared and was not dismissed. It was an extremely useful feature for unnoticed (or away from PC) notifications.

It does not seem to work anymore, I tried both in "Do not disturb" mode and without. Notification appears in the logs, but the icon stays always the same. I cannot find any setting that may affect this.
