Unread Notification Emblem Should Only Be a Fallback

The replacement of notification-new-symbolic with the simple circular emblem makes sense for most themes, but it looks particularly ugly on mine.

The theme that I'm using does in fact have an icon for unread notifications that was present before updating. Is it possible to have the circular emblem only show up as a fallback when no unread icon is detected, or at least have an option in the settings to use either? I'm fairly particular about my theme.
