Images always cropped when printing

After Windows 10 not receiving any updates anymore I installed Xubuntu on the PC from a 90 year (!) old man. He complained the image is cropped when printing. Even when I try to scale down the image in the printing dialog it's not working. This whole printing dialog is a mess. When I click on preview the printing dialog disappears. What logic is that? In the preview window there are buttons for zooming but they won't help as they scale the whole document not the image. My test image is of type PNG and has 2395 x 1288 pixels resolution.

Eye Of Gnome does a much better job here as an example. The image is automatically resized to fit on paper.
