Enable keyboard multimedia keys not allowing my "play/pause" hotkey to work

I understand that the spacebar keyboard button enables play/pause with Parole Media Player but I would love to be able use the play/pause button hotkey on my keyboard because I take notes from audio recordings of my classes and I frequently need to pause and play in order to take notes. I went into preferences and "Enable keyboard multimedia keys" was already toggled on so it seems that keyboard multimedia key functionality should be permitted in Parole but for some reason it's not working. I tried deselecting "Enable keyboard multimedia keys" and then selecting it again but the play/pause hotkey still doesn't work. Could someone please help?
