Ctrl and = togother does not zoom in (requires holding shift) despire Ctrl and - together zooming out without the need to hold shift

Tested on a live session of Xubuntu 24.10 which comes bundled with Mousepad 0.6.2 by default.

　

Simply put, in Mousepad, Ctrl and = together does not zoom in and instead you have to hold shift (presumably to do a Ctrl and + instead). By contrast, zooming out works perfectly fine with Ctrl and - together and does not require you to hold shift.

This is obviously quite problematic on laptops which commonly do not have a numpad.

For reference, other text editors such as FeatherPad and gnome-text-editor do not have this issue. Not shown in the video is that Thunar behaves the same as gnome-text-editor whereby you can use Ctrl and = together to zoom in as well as Ctrl and + together.

Because they map several keys to the same action, but it's normal to have to press Shift if + is at level 1 on a keyboard. Gedit also works like this, for example (but the -/+ keys on the numpad are also mapped by default, unlike mousepad).

Well, I'd say: shortcuts can be edited via the shortcut editor (you need to activate the plugin in the preferences). I'm not sure we'd want to change that (or that it'd be easy, as it would require multiple shortcuts for the same action, which I don't think we currently support), but we can always leave it open as a enhancement request.

Yes it is: Ctrl++ is one shortcut, Ctrl+= is another one. What if you want to do something with Ctrl++ and another thing with Ctrl+= (e.g reset zoom with Ctrl+=)? Thunar seems to map Ctrl++ and Ctrl+= to the same thing, again not sure we want to do that here. But you can change Ctrl++ for Ctrl+= in the shortcut editor.

I don't know, maybe they built mousepad without libxfce4ui support, but I doubt it. @lastonestanding do you happen to have a way of testing this at hand?

You can edit the shortcuts directly in ~/.config/Mousepad/accels.scm anyway, but close mousepad first and use another editor.

Out of the following distros I tested with, the keyboard shortcuts plugin was only available on Manjaro Xfce:

• Linux Mint Xfce 22(.0) (Mousepad 0.6.1; not installed by default)
• LMDE 6 - Linux Mint Debian Edition 6 (Mousepad 0.5.11; not installed by default)
• Lubuntu 24.10 (Mousepad 0.6.2; not installed by default)

Thanks for the overview. That should fix it for the next version: !136 (merged).

That being said, when testing the keyboard shortcut plugin's functionality in Manjaro, I did notice that it only lets you map a single key/combination to a given action...

This means that it's not possible to use Ctrl and = together (for the main keyboard area) as well as Ctrl and NUM + together (for the numpad) to zoom in concurrently, and the same goes for Ctrl and - togother as well as Ctrl and NUM - together for zooming out.

Yes, this is a limitation that occurs at least in mousepad, but I believe also in libxfce4ui (where the shortcut editor is located). But gtk does allow it, so ultimately it should be possible to remove it.
