Issues - Two UX+ issues:
Undesirable - current behaviour;
Expected:
System etc: Intel 2nd gen dual core i5, 16GB RAM
Ubuntu-Studio official flavor, 21.04.3, XFCE repo added to it manually so that XFCE 4.16 could be in operation (This flavor is: XFCE as DE, env modified from base Ubuntu for creative work; low latency kernel, Jack audio subsystem (on+bridge/off) and tweaks (governor setting, etc) in a dedicated app, and creative Audio/Visual software included)
Best
Actions now:
as advised in Ask Ubuntu,trying to feed the incident into bug triage pipeline of XUbuntu packages (Ubuntu Studio is based off XUbuntu), and will share the culprit for the benefit of the community, in case similar thing happen to more users' systems.
Thanks agqin everyone for taking a look into the issue experienced here
Dear,
I will write simply as it unfolded, and will try to make a clear and concise feedback;
This is preliminary report but tested true.
To debug, I can traverse dirs, gather logs, change configs, diff xfce configs etc. upon instructions I find at internet or from the kind people here.
Repeatability:
Run Ubuntu-Studio 20.04.2 LTS 64 bit (same as main Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS as its base optionally, it runs XFCE4.14 as default).
Upgrade to 4.16 by adding repo and upgrading
Notice that double wifi and Bell icons in panel appears as a result of sys tray plugin, and indicator plugin parallell existence (4.16 apparently did not take that in account)
Fumble around with the issue of double-shown wireless and notification (bell) icon to eliminate two icons showing twice
By pressing add applet add multiple indicator-applet into Panel at the last position in the strip (fin my case, simply out of a system lag at that moment and multiple clicks)
Start removing them one by one
Notice that when the last indicator-applet is removed, the whole system logs out and is impossible to login untiul multiple fumblings with session ubuntu or XFCA and numerous reboots.
Observe it works for a few days, until it spontaneously logged out by itself (possibly by apt-get update upgrade dist-upgrade changed something
One day restart the machine and witness that this time you can not login permanently
Damages:
5 days system offline, production pipeline fully out, lost revenue etc..
Path to solution:
inspecting solutions over the internet and official guidelines;
IRCq at Libra.chat: two days waiting for the spontaneous logout session bug to be addressed.. still no answer
Mailing list: subscribed, getting about to report over that channel as well
My own active work:
As I ditched Windows OS recently - managed to learn the basic em'cy move of pressing Alt+CTRL+F4, logged in console, created new user and added it to a sudo group
back to lightdm login screen: Login to graphical temporary account and XFCE successful - XFCE works normally insofar. (However, the data and all production setup stays in the primary user account).
Problems remaining - management TODO:
-primary user is still locked out of XFCE, therefore nondestructive cleaning up XFCE 4.16 on primary account is necessary so it logs in permanantly again -deduce which component bug freaks 4.16 out and autologs it out - as it is clear it is some kind of instability in reading out the old values With that in connection, deleting old valuse ius the least desired path as;
